Happy Father’s/Mentor’s Day | by Ryan Swalve
I was reflecting on the importance of Father’s Day the past few weeks and kept coming back to one word. Mentor.
I was fortunate to grow up close to my two grandfathers. Both of my grandfathers served in World War 2 and worked very hard for everything they had. They taught me at a very young age that nothing in this world is free. They had both survived The Great Depression and they shared many things with me that they learned as they struggled to survive.
My Dad worked in manufacturing his whole life and worked very long hours. I would hear the door slam by 6:00 in the morning and most of the time he wouldn’t be home until after 6:00 pm. I remember thinking when I was little, “what the heck does he do all day?” Looking back, I can see that he was outworking and out-hustling everyone else to provide more for our family.
I now realize how fortunate I am to have grown up with three great mentors. While both of my grandfathers have passed away, I still think of them often and remember the lessons they taught me. My Dad is still my mentor. He is always there to help guide me through business decisions and life in general. I wouldn’t be where I am at today without him.
Take time to focus on why Father’s Day is so important. I know that I am not the only one that has grown up with a great Dad and great grandfathers. Today is the day to say THANK YOU!
